As Bangladesh grapples with an ongoing heatwave, the demand for ceiling fans has surged dramatically. With extreme temperatures disrupting daily life, ceiling fans have become a vital household appliance, offering both relief and energy savings.
Traditional ceiling fans, typically rated at 70 watts, can contribute an additional BDT 150–170 to the monthly electricity bill if used for 8–10 hours a day. However, fans equipped with BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) technology are gaining popularity for their efficiency—consuming as little as 35 watts and reducing electricity usage by up to 65%.
Market analysis reveals that from March to June, fan sales nearly double each year. Retailers in New Market, Kakrail, and Mirpur report a significant rise in customer footfall, particularly for BLDC-powered fans.
According to a local electronics vendor, “Previously, people focused on price alone. Now, they are prioritizing energy efficiency. While BLDC fans are slightly more expensive, they offer long-term savings.”
In light of rising power demand during summer months, the government has encouraged energy-efficient practices, including substituting air conditioners with fans. A nationwide initiative has also been launched to reduce electricity consumption by 15%.
Experts advise consumers to choose high-quality, energy-efficient appliances rather than cheaper alternatives. This not only reduces household expenses but also contributes to easing the national electricity crisis.
